Gas prices ease for 8th straight day
Monday, September 08, 2008
CNN Money -- NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline prices continued to decline, easing for the eighth straight day, as Tropical Storm Hanna dumped heavy rain on the entire eastern coast of the United States, according to a nationwide survey of gas station credit card swipes.

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline fell 0.7 cents to $3.658 a gallon from $3.665 a day earlier, motorist group AAA said Monday.

With Hanna gone, Hurricane Ike is now front and center and on a path toward the Gulf of Mexico. The Category 2 storm could regain strength as it heads toward the Texas/Louisiana border, according to the latest hurricane center track map. Gas prices eased in both those states. Prices also slipped in the Carolinas and Georgia.

I totally agree with Don1222's take on the need for price controls. As I sit here, after abserving another increase in gas prices, over 2 cents, while the price of oil does not move, yesterday, in any meaninful direction it occures to me that such a commodity, necessary for most of the running of both our economies, should not be left to the impulse of the greedy who have no inclination to curb their already huge profits. Price control, short of summary execution for the crime of excess greed at the cost of entire nations, is a good thing.

Don't know whether to get gas today or not now. Yesterday morning $3.49, around 5pm yesterday $3.47, was still $3.47 this morning at 7:30am. Will it go up or will it go down? hmmmm

To stabilize gasoline prices we need competition. Otherwise we need price control. With utilities the government regulates the rates. If we want to keep the government out of it, we need alternative fuels independent of the oil companies.

Lobby congress to actively support alternative energy. The oil companies are lobbying congress to support oil without any regulation. Congress will listen to their constituents. Call, write, or e-mail them. They need to hear from thousands of us daily until they get the message. If they don't listen, vote the incumbents out. Look at the mess this country is in, the incumbents are not doing anything worthwhile anyway. We have nothing to loose.

Retil prices going down is a bit troublesome for the long run... US drivers will simply fall back into their bad habits, because $3.66 is a dollar less than we paid earlier in the summer - who needs to worry now? That will also lead to more pressure on ANWR and the protected off-shore areas as the dolts hope gasoline falls back to $2 or even less...

Gas prices are not easing down here, they are shooting up to $3.95 here today. Some stations were $3.55 this morning and now Speedways have all already raised prices. What's up with that?

I think the general trend for gas prices will be downward until after the election.

Then all bets are off and if the "R's" get the White House the prices will go through the roof!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "D" either. I don't think either party has all the answers, but on this one point: I speak from what we have all seen.

What I don't understand is how the wholesale price for unleaded gas can drop $.13 in a day, and the retail price drops $.01 or even goes up. I got it that oil prices and gas prices are not directly linked (unless oil is going up--then they are), but it sure seems like wholesale gas prices ought to be directly linked with retail gas prices. But I'm sure there's an economist or oil industry specialist somewhere who can prove me wrong.

Another BIG WIND heading towards Houston! Hold on, prices may be reversing themselves.....if not it will be because of the up coming election! It realy is strange how the closer it is to a tight election race.....the cheaper fuel prices become?

Ike appears to not go any stronger than a cat 3, and latest track shows it might not hit the USA at all, but hit Mexico. (which is also a huge oil producer for the USA)

We need to drill off the coast of CA and FL, and in Alaska, that way we don't have all our oil rigs in one area.
